British Sign Language Level 1 (Signature Certificate)

Qualification Aim

This qualification is designed to enable learners to communicate with Deaf people in British Sign Language (BSL) on a range of topics that involve simple, everyday conversation vocabulary. A BSL Level 1 course involves very basic conversational vocabulary, such as introduction of yourself, where you live, what your job is etc.

What does the course involve?

The qualification is divided into three units, each of which can be achieved separately.  Learners who are new to BSL should cover the introductory course first. The Level 1 consists of three units 101, 102 and 103.

To achieve the full Level 1 Award in British Sign Language, candidates are required to pass all three units.

Course Fee (including exam fee): £350 (TBC)

British Sign Language Level 2 (Signature Certificate)

Qualification Aim

This qualification is designed to enable learners to develop an ability to communicate with Deaf people using British Sign Language (BSL) in a range of familiar contexts, participating in longer and more open-ended exchanges than at Level 1.

The course will develop functional communication in BSL about a range of real life, routine, and daily experiences.  The learner will be able to deal with most routine language tasks and have sufficient grasp of grammar to cope with some non-routine tasks. Learners should be taught a number of regional variations in sign language.

What does the course involve?

The qualification is divided into three units 201, 202 and 203.

Although, the units can be done in any order at any time, it is recommended that the content of Unit 201 is covered before Unit 202 or 203.

To achieve the full Level 2 Certificate in British Sign Language, candidates are required to achieve all three units.

Course Fee (including exam fee) £550 (TBC)

Advanced Skills (Pre-Level 3 Course)

Have you completed your Level 2 in BSL and think how on earth am I going to get to Level 3 standard without working within the Deaf community? This course is designed as a bridging course from Level 2 to Level 3 as a huge leap is found between these two courses of study. For those who wish to gain a high standard in BSL at Level 3, learners are strongly advised to attend the Advanced Skills  Pre-Level 3 course.

The Advanced Skills Pre-Level 3 British Sign Language course does not lead to summative assessment, but you will receive personal feedback as to which areas of the language you need to focus on in order to improve and achieve at Level 3 standard. Learners will be presented with a full certificate of attendance.

Regular feedback will be provided, both signed and written, so that learners understand how to improve on the areas highlighted. Self-assessment will be explained and undertaken so that learners are able to begin the process of recognising signing standards.

This course is designed for the learner to be ready for level 3 standard before starting the NVQ level 3 course - a requirement specified by Signature.

Course Fee: £300 to £500
